A public-record analysis of every police-reported motor-vehicle crash in Massachusetts over three complete years, ranked by city and by road. The figures below come straight from the state's own crash records.

Key findings

Bicycle-crash capital

Cambridge recorded 384 bicyclist crashes over 2022 to 2024, the most of any Massachusetts municipality. That is more than Boston (273) and far more than Worcester (116), even though Cambridge logs only 4,774 total crashes against Boston's 17,407. Measured against its size, Cambridge is the bicycle-crash capital of the Commonwealth.

Highest fatality rate

Among high-volume cities (at least 5,000 crashes over the three years), Chicopee carries the highest fatality rate at 4.2 fatal crashes per 1,000 crashes, ahead of Springfield (4) and Boston (3.7). A high total-crash count is a function of traffic volume; a high fatality rate points to how severe the average crash tends to be.

Most dangerous roads

By raw crash count, Main St leads the state with 2,672 crashes in the most recent year of record. By fatal crashes, Interstate 495 N tops the list with 9. The full road rankings appear below.

Methodology and limits

These figures count police-reported motor-vehicle crashes. A crash enters the record when a Massachusetts law-enforcement officer files a crash report with the Registry of Motor Vehicles, so minor incidents that were never reported are not represented. The window is the three complete calendar years 2022 to 2024; partial-year data is excluded so every city is compared on the same basis.

Raw crash counts favor larger cities, because more residents, more vehicles, and more road miles produce more crashes. To keep the picture honest, this report also ranks cities by fatality rate (fatal crashes per 1,000 crashes) and by vulnerable-user counts (bicyclist and pedestrian crashes), which surface patterns that population-driven totals hide.

When this report describes a road or a city as dangerous, it means higher measured crash frequency or severity in the public record, not a judgment about any driver, municipality, or road authority. MassDOT identifies its own high-crash locations using an equivalent-property-damage-only (EPDO) weighting that scores fatal and injury crashes more heavily than property-damage crashes; the city and road rankings here are a simpler frequency and fatality view of the same underlying records. Fatal-crash totals are cross-referenced against the NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System, which is the authoritative national count of traffic fatalities.
